South Korean military exercise -- who wins/won?

I was quite worried last night that if anything bad would occur from
South Korean military exercise yesterday.
It is a good relief that N Korea did not do anything against (or
anything stupid). I thought that South Korea would eventually have won
if they refrained from the military exercise this time. But probably
it was too much of hope for the current gov.

At least the South gov seems to have gained self pride by acting tough, but I
am not sure if they would draw much international support from their
action.
South gov is a bit in dilemma. Most (conservative) Koreans wanted
their gov to stay tough against North's aggression. It also faces
many oppositions from opposition parties and various civilian
group, including Catholics and Buddhist for the series of scandals and
corruption charges. Majority protestants still supports the gov (any clue why?), but if the
South gov did stop the military exercise under pressure from North's
aggression, even that support would sure to have went away. So, the South
gov did not have much choice but to go for the exercise. Again, voice
of peace (which called for stopping the military exercise) was not
much heard in South Korea, if there was any.

Ironically, North gov played their cards very well again this time by
inviting Richardson and showing some peace gesture. Also, the military
drill from South was said to be rather confined -- mostly with short range guns (2~4 km
range) that was not probably enough to hit the nerve of the North's
military. Some South Koreans seemed rather disappointed by the
magnitude of the artillery used in the exercise. Doh!

There came a news that Russia and China decided to launch a joint
military exercise next year at the north of East Sea (Sea of Japan)
that involves their elite army, navy and air forces. US has launched
military exercises with Japan and Korea for many years, and alas,
Russia and China are now strong enough militarily and economically to
stand against US. About 150 years ago, Korea was not strong and many
factions in the gov sided with Russia, China and Japan for more
political power, and 50 years later (100 years ago), Korea became
Japanese colony after Japan won wars with Russia and China.
Now, two Koreas are waging strikingly similar political games for
their own political gains at the cost of the overall welfare of
their own people.

I was so stressed yesterday in a church meeting that, one senior deacon in the church boldly sad
that South Korean gov should not back down and support for military
exercise. He has (or at least appears to have) a deep faith in Christ
and spends lots of time and effort on many Church related works. Some
of the most basic and fundamental teachings of Jesus -- "Love your
enemy" or "If one hits your right face, then offer him your left face"
-- were nowhere to find in him. Well, I should not be surprised since
I've seen many US Christians saying that "Jesus landed in White House"
when Dubya got elected.

Peace,
